Out and about Oct. 11

Apparently Oct. 12 is International Moment of Frustration Day and, as part of its observance, people from around the world are encouraged to go outdoors and scream at an allotted time for 30 seconds. You could spent part of your weekend doing that, or you could put your time toward planning some fun activities. I hope I can help in getting you started …

Musicians will be taking to the area’s stages throughout the weekend. On Friday, you have Lisa Marie Prestley in Ridgefield; Brian Wilson and Jeff Beck in Wallingford; Keller Williams in New Haven; a Johnny Cash tribute band, Ports of Spain and Generation Blues Band, all in Bridgeport; Those Mockingbirds and WCSU Jazz Combos in Danbury; Lucy Kaplansky and Echoes of Erin in Fairfield; Music of Medieval England in Washington; and Suzanne Sheridan in Westport.

On Saturday, you have Tom Crowley and Elvis Prestley Jr. in Fairfield; The Zamboinis in Bridgeport; Philippe Quint and the Greenwich Symphony in Greenwich; the Mariinsky Orchestra in Purchase, N.Y.; the “Italian Michael Buble” Patrizio Buanne in Ridgefield; a harp gathering in Hamden; Brother Sun in Westport; the Milk Carton Kids in Katonah, N.Y.; and an all-star jazz concert to celebrate the music of Billie Holiday in Greenwich.

On Sunday, check out Alice Cooper in Purchase, N.Y.; come classical orchestral and ensemble in Danbury; Pierce Pettis in Ridgefield; and the Sean Smith Trio in Westport.

On stage you can find a special run of David Mamet’s “Oleanna” by the Newtown Town Players. “The Underpants” gets under way in New Haven. “Weekend One-Acts” will be presented at Darien Library. “The 39 Steps” begins in White Plains, N.Y. and M&M Productions offers “Time Stands Still” in Stamford. And, the Great Danbury Fair Revue arrives at the Palace Danbury.

If you are looking for a “super” time, stop by the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk where Thor will be making an appearance. Or, check out another iconic character when Connecticut Ballet stages “Cinderella” at the Palace Theatre in Stamford. Trains and models will be in view in Orange at the New Haven & Derby Model Railroad Club’s Model Train Show. You can see a showcase of cars at Joel Barlow High School in Redding.

You can also enjoy a free open house and family fun day at the Shubert Theatre in New Haven on Saturday. Or, make your way to the Norwalk Public Library to meet Norwalk resident and author, illustrator and cartoonist Jerry Craft with sons Jaylen and Aren, who will be discussing their book “The Offenders: Saving the World While Serving Detention” on Saturday.

There are a couple of films worth seeing too. Get close to a great white shark without fearing its bite at the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk. Or, head over to Greenwich Library on Friday night for a documentary on Billie Holiday, which kicks of a weekend of her music.

What is a weekend without festivals, of course. Enjoy Fiesta Latina on Saturday in New Haven. Celebrate artistic creativity in Greenwich at the Outdoor Arts Festival at the Bruce Museum. Greenwich also will be the site for a fall festival and scarecrow competition, (while there, check out the “New Spirit” exhibition.) The Scarecrow Festival sets down in Trumbull. Newtown, Danbury, Milford and Fairfield will be the scene of pumpkin festivals. There will be haunted happenings in Shelton and Woodbridge (though these will be on the move). Though not quite a festival, there’ s Brew at the Zoo in Bridgeport.

For those around on Columbus Day, there are some events planned in the region including hiking events at the Stamford Museum and Nature Center and the Bartlett Arboretum, both in Stamford, an orienteering event in Ansonia. Mystic Seaport will be celebrating chowder throughout the weekend.

Later in the week, see what Soleil Moon Frye, who played TV’s Punky Brewster in the 1980s, has been up to. She will be signing copies of her new book at Barrett Bookstore in Darien on Wednesday.

Until next time …
